A Divine Darshan of Six Maha Vishnu Temples: A Vaishnavite Pilgrim's Guide to Thiruvalla

Why Thiruvalla for a Vaishnavite Pilgrimage?
I found a way for my family to take up the Thiruvalla and Chengannur Maha Vishnu temple darshan visit this September. Every Vaishnavite Sampradhaya follower of Sri Ramanujar will be aware of the presence of six sacred Maha Vishnu shrines in and around Thiruvalla, as prescribed and adored by Kulasekara Alwar in his revered Divyaprabanda Paasurams from the 11th century. So a chance to have the darshan of all those temples, along with some other eminent Maha Vishnu temples nearby, was something I could not miss, especially after finding a suitable travel assist and an accommodation that met our needs.
The Kerala Vishnu temples offer us a unique darshan experience as they have stayed off the commercial elements that have found their way in and around other temples. They have been intentionally kept untouched, giving us a feel of walking through 19th century corridors that are dimly lit by natural oil lamps rather than modern electrical fixtures. The temple custodians preserve strict, age-worn customs following traditional southern dress code, which makes one wonder why such pure heritage has been let go elsewhere.
Getting There: The Train and Self-Drive Route
We trained off to Ernakulam on a Friday night with a couple of trolley bags, as the train stations have become absolutely trolley-friendly. The train was on time at SMVT Bengaluru, and we arrived on time at Ernakulam station the next morning.
One of the prime reasons to get off at Ernakulam was the easy availability of self-drive rental cars. I picked a modest Maruti Dzire with IndusGo, which was dropped off promptly at the station by a helpful representative who completed all the handover documentation smoothly. We chose the Avenue Regent hotel at Ernakulam to stay overnight, as it provided easy access to the beach as well as the two Maha Vishnu temples at Thirumoozhikkulam and the Vamana Temple (Thrikkakara), which are about 20 miles from the hotel.
Finding the Right Stay: Riverside Retreat
The other four Divya Desam temples (Aranmula, Thiripuliyoor, Thirichittathu, and Thirikodithanam) are roughly 70 miles from Ernakulam, clustered near the lovely town of Thiruvalla. We wanted to find a good, compact, private accommodation for our family of five so that we could drive down to reach there in the afternoon, as the temples usually remain closed for visitors from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A home, instead of a hotel, would allow us to rest with open space, offering the facility of a clean kitchen where we could prepare light food of our choice without searching for a pure vegetarian eatery.

This is where I came across the Riverside Retreat homestay when browsing on Google Maps to locate a place central to these four temples, offering an easy commute, minimal traffic, easy check-in, and total safety for the family away from city chaos. When I zoomed in on the location, the name of Riverside Retreat caught my attention.
I phoned the contact number to check availability, which connected me directly with the owner of the facility. He confirmed availability immediately, sounding very humble and accommodating. He even offered a rate more economical than standard booking portals. This was reassuring, as I could place personal requests about the home, such as maintaining a strict vegetarian milieu inside the house during our stay.
Day 1 Evening: Three Temples in 25 Miles
Our aim was to have the darshan of three Maha Vishnu temples on the evening we checked in, followed by three other temples the next morning before breakfast. This is where the central location proved crucial: it took just about 25 miles of driving in each half to complete the circuit with minimum fuss and stress. All temples were peaceful and uncrowded, offering us ample time for a close, serene darshan unlike the hurried crowds typical of weekend visits.

Day 2 Morning: Completing the Circuit
The next morning's itinerary started at 7:00 AM, allowing us to complete darshans at the remaining shrines and return home by 11:00 AM for a relaxed brunch.

Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple: A Heritage Jewel
Among the highlights was our darshan at the famed Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple on the banks of the holy Pamba River, celebrated for its ancient murals, majestic architecture, and profound spiritual energy.

We managed to visit all six temples, including the four Divya Desam shrines, in the shortest possible time while having sufficient rest in between: precisely what a family looks for when travelling with ageing parents and young children.
The Homestay Experience: Life on the Manimala River

The homestay itself is a beauty. Situated directly on the riverfront, it boasts a majestic view of the Manimala River with unparalleled monsoon vibes and intermittent showers throughout our stay. My personal highlight was the presence of the puzha (river), which originates near Vagamon in the Western Ghat highlands before winding through Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts to join its sister river, the sacred Pamba.

Nobody bothered us during our 24-hour stay, which ran from 2:00 PM on Day 1 until 3:00 PM on Day 2. The host was gracious enough not to charge extra for staying beyond the standard 12:00 noon checkout.
This flexibility allowed us two additional hours of rest before we set off to visit Alappuzha beach (just an hour's drive west from the homestay), after which we drove to Ernakulam to return our rental car and board the train back to Bengaluru. For those who prefer to hire a taxi to visit these temples, plenty of reliable cab services are available in Thiruvalla town itself, just 1.5 miles from the homestay.

Planning Your Temple Pilgrimage
"Overall, a divine darshan of temples requires a peaceful stay and stress-free travel so that one can focus wholeheartedly on the Bhagavan during each visit. Choosing the right stay and travel plan holds the key."
I felt fortunate to achieve both peaceful travel and a deeply fulfilling spiritual experience during this trip. I hope this itinerary and perspective offer useful guidance to fellow Vaishnavite pilgrims and families planning their journey to the sacred shrines of Thiruvalla.
